A path into bonsai

Visual artist and bonsai teacher

Sergio Cuan studied art and design at Pratt Institute. He describes himself as largely self-taught in bonsai. His New Jersey garden and M5 Bonsai Works provide the setting for his practice.

Style and working approach

Deciduous trees, particularly maples, elms and beeches, are a focus. His artistic eye connects branching, proportion and the character of the tree. Longwood Gardens documents his work on a cork-bark elm in December 2025.
