Pruning bonsai starts with a purpose, not with the scissors. A branch may still help build the trunk even if it looks too long for a finished silhouette. Development and refinement need different cuts
During development, selected shoots may need length and strength. During refinement, shorter internodes, useful bud direction and balanced energy become more important. Confusing the two phases either slows development or produces a dense crown without a durable branch structure.
Four checks before a cut
- Is the tree vigorous enough, and does the work suit its current season?
- Is the shoot building structure, thickening, ramification or flowers?
- Where is the next useful bud, and how does this species respond?
- Will several shoots at one point create swelling?
Flowering species, deciduous trees, pines and other conifers do not respond identically. A recently repotted, diseased or heat-stressed tree is not stabilised by extra styling. Clean, sharp tools and a defined objective therefore belong to the decision.
